For your convenience, we
have provided the answers to the Frequently Asked Questions about Vieques, below.
How Do I Get to
Vieques Island?
Our island is situated eight
miles off the Eastern coast of Puerto Rico
and can be reached by air as well as by ferry from Fajardo.
MN Aviation and Vieques Air Link depart from
Isla
Grande Airport,
a small airport near Old San Juan, just ten minutes from International
Airport. Their planes are new,
modern and air-conditioned. The round-trip price is approximately $90 and
they take approximately 20 minutes. They have flights to Vieques
at 8:15 AM – 1PM – 3PM – 5PM.
From Vieques they leave at 7:30 AM – 2PM
– 4:15PM and
7PM. Call for update and
information at 787-741-3911 (MN Aviation) or 787-741-8211 (VAL).
Vieques Air
Link (VAL) leaves also leaves from
San Juan International
Airport - Luis Muñoz Marín and from Fajardo at
the Eastern end of the island.
From Isla Grande and International
airports they have three flights per day each direction. From the International
Airport the fare is $135
round-trip. From Fajardo the fare is $36 round-trip, however the taxi
ride from International is approximately $75. Their phone number is (787) 253-3644 or
toll free (888) 901- 9247 at International.
The
ferry leaves Fajardo for Vieques,
Monday through Friday at 9:30 AM, 1 PM and 4:30 PM and on Saturday and
Sunday at 9 AM, 3 PM and 6 PM. The
fare is $2. The taxi fare from the
San Juan
area to Fajardo is approximately $75. The trip takes approximately 1-1/2
hours. The return times for the ferry are 7AM,11
AM & 3 PM, Monday thru Friday. On weekends the trips are at 7AM, 1PM,
and 4:30 PM. The cargo ferry is for local cargo only and is impossible to
get your car on. If they do take your reservation they are most likely to
give it to a local merchant at the last minute. We recommend flying…it is
much faster!
Renting
a car is a must, as so many of our greatest beaches are inaccessible
without one, and we do not serve lunch and are closed for dinner on
Monday and Tuesday. There are
several car rental companies on Vieques. The
prices range from $40 to $70 per day. Rentals can be arranged by our
office staff.
What is
there to do in Vieques?
Vieques
Island is not
commercially developed. There are
still plenty of wide-open spaces, country roads and rolling hills. The language spoken most often is
English and the American dollar is the standard. Most credit cards are accepted in the
majority of businesses.
The beaches are amazing,
plentiful and empty for the most part.
There are no movie theaters, shopping malls or traffic
lights. There are a few art
galleries, small stores and some local craftsmen. There is great snorkeling and scuba
diving and one of the world's finest bioluminescent bays. We would be happy to help you make
arrangements to participate in these activities, if you wish. We have no television but we do have a
good hard-cover library and perfect weather.
What there "is not to
do" here is also Vieques' best
feature.
Vieques
Island gets well seasoned
travelers who have been many places and find this the place where they
always want to return. They read,
walk, sleep, swim, eat and make new friends.
If you have business to attend
to while on vacation we must inform you that we have only been allowed
two business phone lines (part of the ‘charm’ of the Caribbean).
We do allow a few short calls from our lines and we have a payphone for
long or frequent calls.
Please email us your other
questions and concerns...we'd love to answer you personally! We
look forward to seeing you soon and sharing with you our view of the blue
horizon.....
